Yep, BPS is coming to San Jose!

Going to be located off of Almaden and 85. I'm guessing in the same shopping center as Bed Bath and Beyond?
:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

What else can you say? Feel sorry for the local shops though, well cept for one that is}:(
First Hooters, now this? Maybe the Bay Area isn't completely nuts. Maybe.
I guess we have enough bass fishermen/women in the area.
Mixed feeling about this though. I had had bad experience with BPS Mantica and I don't like they don't honor Shimano's over the counter exchange. I am avoiding buying from them. Yet, there are limitation in the local shops stock, so if they come here, I'll probably go there. And of course, feel bad for the local shops.
That's only a couple of miles from where I'm at, looking forward to it. Not to buy from them but because I can go and see/touch stuff before I buy. I'll still try to buy all of my stuff from Coyote.

It's that huge undeveloped farmland across the street from Scramblz - it got re-zoned for commercial use.
good or bad , not so sure . I always try to give my business to the locals , better service , better local knowledge etc...
On the bad side , that area , especially the intersection for Best Buy and Walmart is the most screwed up intersection in SJ. Now add another huge shopping center across the street !!!WOW.
On the good side , I used to buy from BPS all the way back in the mid seventies -----yeah some of us are OLD TIMERS . The only products they had were for BASS fishing and the catalogs were as small as i magazine , but man , talk about addictive , by the time the new catalog came out , the old one was totally trashed. I would mow as many lawns as possible just to get a shot at placing an order. Back then Shimano wasn't even a product you could buy , it was Abu Garcia or Diawa, that was it . A really good Garcia baitcaster was $20 , and yes I still have it. Talk about learning to throw a baitcaster with crappy backlash control !! My thumb still hurts.
They will be coming in town just as SCVWD closes down Anderson.
Tight lines ,
Robb
Bass pro is great for a lot of things; but all my bait fix will still come from Mels and coyote… 8-)
In all reality, I think that BPS will hurt a lot of the small local businesses. I know there are a lot of us that are willing to continue supporting the local shops, but sadly, the majority doesn't have the same loyalty which results in these places having to close up shop. Even if BPS takes 25% of the business away from these other shops, it can be enough to hurt them bad financially.

Oh well, I guess we'll find out in a few years, but historically speaking, when any retail giant opens up, we all know what happens to the other small businesses.

I can say for one thing, in the end, whatever shop survives will be due to their level of customer service, since that's what these major retail stores lack.
I rarely shop around the area that their going to build the new bps, but I have seen the exit off of 85 get really nasty on weekends/holidays so I can see where there could be an issue. Yes, it will hurt the small businesses (coyote, fishermans warehouse, mels, local gun shops, etc.), but I don't think it's such a bad thing in a sense that it will have alot more options then the snail businesees we support. I will still shop at the local stores but when they don't have what I need (certain color scheme, specific reel ratio, specific rod specs) then I know where I can find it and not have to do a special order. I think there's both positive and negative things that can come from this. But IMO I think it's a good thing. Beats driving to Manteca!!
I know its gonna suck for a lot of businesses but I'm definitely excited to see it open up. I've never been to a Bass Pro Shop before, but have heard of people taking trips to the Manteca store just to check it out. Must be quite a shop.
I stopped by the Manteca BPS on the way up to Sacramento - it's big and nice but everything is sold at retail MSRP. Their biggest draw is the selection, where you can see and feel what you're buying beforehand, as opposed to trying to figure out online if it's what you're looking for.

Coyote's frequent buyer program is a great incentive to keep going back, so I always try to get my terminal tackle/artificials there. I go to San Jose Fishery for live bait, Ly's(he's just a cool dude so I try to support his shop) or Fisherman's Warehouse (better selection than BPS) for rods. For reels I'll be honest and buy those online, since you can almost always find them on sale or well-discounted somewhere.
Funny, I just got my BPS catalog in the mail today. I call it porn for fisherman lol
I will continue to support Coyote, I could careless about corporate. The only thing that I am excited for with BPS coming is the Fudge shop, cheap Quicksilver Premium Plus 2 stroke oil, and returning my bibs every year for new ones. The hunting dept is really good.

Not to mention that their prices are way over priced. Its a glorified walmart with no specialty selection like Coyote.

Now everyone is gonna buy Nitro's lol. I am very glad I am out of my nitro.

I do like the fact that its opening across the street from my work, though I dont plan on being there in 2015
bass pro shops is mehhh. the best place is tacklewarehouse with an unreal selection of bass tackle including a new deal every day on a bait. free shipping on orders over $50 is a win in my book and you get your order in a day. ill never waste gas driving to san jose for an okay selection.
Actually there's one feature I hope they add in this BPS, and that's one of those huge demo tanks so maybe some of the pros can come here and do some demos/seminars! The Manteca store has a tank but it's more of an aquarium than a functional use tank.
